If you choose Trang An, there's a further decision most visitors never realise they're making: the cruise runs on one of three set routes, each leaving from the same pier but taking a different loop through the caves and temples. They vary in length from about two to nearly four hours and in what they emphasise — history, scenery, or the film set. On a booked day tour you'll usually be put on the standard route that fits the schedule; travelling independently, you can ask for a specific one when you buy your boat ticket.
Route 1 — the history route
The longest and most popular option, roughly three to four hours, taking in nine caves and three temples, including the Trinh and Tran temples and the old Khong residence. It's the most culturally rich of the three and the classic choice if you have the time and want the fullest version of the Trang An experience. Because it's the busiest, starting early pays off.
Route 2 — the scenery route
A shorter loop of about two to two and a half hours, four caves and four temples, with the most open karst scenery and the best chance of birdlife. It passes near the areas used for filming Kong: Skull Island without stopping at the set. If your priority is the landscape and the photography rather than temple-hopping, this is the pick.
Route 3 — the Kong route
Around three hours, three caves and three temples, and the only route that actually visits the recreated Kong: Skull Island village. Parts of the 2016 film were shot in the Trang An area; the original sets were dismantled in 2019 to protect the UNESCO landscape, and a rebuilt native-village set now stands for visitors. If the movie connection is a genuine draw for your group, Route 3 is the one to ask for.
Which route a tour actually runs
Here's the honest part: a packaged day tour's Trang An segment is usually about an hour and forty minutes to two hours, which fits the shorter standard routes rather than the full Route 1. If a specific route matters to you — Route 3 for the film set, or Route 1 for the maximum caves — check with the operator before booking, or consider going independently so you can choose at the pier. For most visitors, the route the tour runs is perfectly scenic; it's only worth fussing over if you have a specific reason.
